100 Sculptural Circumstances is my debut, full-length photo book. It’s an unfolding of 103 images resurrected from 500 sculptural circumstances. a slideshow I sequenced in the summer of 2025 as part an art proposal that never found a home.
This work documents the forces of creation and destruction at play in the urban environment of Montreal. The overflow of material objects results in art-like installations and chance assemblages of discarded ephemera. I call these photographic opportunities sculptural circumstances.
Some of the unique categories of sculptural circumstance that I have selected for this book include:
i) commercial sculpture, produced by local businesses to promote their services and products
ii) found assemblages
iii) ice formations
iv) interventions using unconventional, improvised materials to temporarily repair an object, or solve a practical dilemma.
v) materials and/or objects transformed due to impact or accident
vi) objects protectively wrapped in textiles such as houses, boats, or barbecues
vii) sculptural abstracts, which are abstract images that fill the entire frame and include three-dimensional features
viii) spaces and objects reclaimed by nature
ix) the incidental layering and draping of textiles such as rugs or tarps
x) Thomasson Hyperart, such as the remnants of staircases or other architectural features that no longer serve a practical purpose
Sculptural circumstances evoke the long tradition of art history through their accidental form, structure, and material confluences. It’s my hope that the continuous flow of aesthetic accidents in this book will evoke a sense of awe in the everyday world similar to what I experience while I’m out photographing in the streets and alleys of Montreal. 100 sculptural circumstances is a call to action that challenges the viewer to be fascinated by the world, and invites them into the embrace of the alchemy of the mundane, which is so very central to my photographic aesthetic.
